Things That Matter

November 11, 2016

People matter.

Black lives matter.

Minorities matter.

Refugees matter.

Women matter.

LGBT matter.

Human beings matter.

I had a new post written to share about a race I just completed. But now it seems so trivial to be talking about running. There are bigger things on my mind. On everyone’s mind. Heavy.

Nothing has really changed. But everything has changed.

I don’t want to blame, point fingers, or hate. But I am heartbroken right now. I feel hollow and empty. I appreciate uplifting messages that “the sun will rise tomorrow” and “we can still love”, really I do. But I’m just not there yet. I’m mourning.

I’m mourning the loss of dignity, respect, and love that I thought we as humankind had for ourselves, our earth, and each other. I’m mourning the fact that for the first time I realized that many people do not value each and every human being. And that hurts.

How can we say that one human is not as worthy as another? How can we? I don’t even have words.

I don’t understand how we can choose a path that persecutes others. This is NOT ok. And everyone who made a choice to go this direction should be ashamed. Maybe they did not fully think about what a vote really means? It’s more than just choosing a person to lead our country; it sends a message aboutour values. Our beliefs. Our morals.

And right now it feels that we’ve set ourselves out down a dark, scary trail.

I’m heartbroken.

And I will be for awhile. This is not as simple as “the sun will come up tomorrow and all will be ok” kind of thing. This will take months, years, decades of rebuilding to get undo the message we just sent to the entire world.

In reality, many tangible things will not change. I mean, we don’t have to go running for Canada to escape (yet). But the intangible things, the underlying thoughts, words, beliefs we have chosen as our own, have changed everything. Words are powerful, and they have been used to create fear, hate, and persecution. Is this what we really want?

This is not a movement I am proud to support. This is not a united country I am proud to live in. This is not US! What happened America? Where did our values go? I don’t understand.

Like everything, this too shall pass. But, maybe not. Will we ever stop persecuting minorities, refugees, muslims, women,…..? Because the path we are heading down looks awfully tumultuous.

These things matter. Every human being matters. Respect for the environment matters. Who are we if we don’t love each other and where we live? Not in a place I want to be a part of.

I’m beyond with you. Thanks for sharing!

I love it when elites go public with progressive ideology, because you sacrifice something when you are willing to offend those who don’t share your views. Much respect. Then, you don’t quit and you gut out a sub-24 finish at WSER. Even more respect!!
